Long Island- Suffolk County- is considering passing a bill to require animal abusers be registered, so that shelters and stores can know to not sell them pets, and people know to not let their pets roam outside their yard or leave them outside unattended.
I’m divided on this idea- I believe more should be done to protect pets, but I’m not certain a registry is the best idea. What do you think?

When I was out walking my dog, he pranced ahead, sideways, and every which-way but beside me. After a few minutes, I got frustrated and demanded a heel off of him. It took him several minutes to realize I was serious, and then…
It was like he was in an obedience show ring as he pranced alongside me, looking up as he heeled. He knows how to heel. He’s a good heeler. He just chooses to not bother to obey me most of the time! That’s so frustrating, but I know it’s my fault. His work on-leash is pretty bad! (off leash is better- I wonder why? any ideas?)
I’m the one who lowers my criteria, and lets him get away with walking on the end of his leash. It made me take a look at our agility and see what else I’m letting him get away with. (I am looking at you, nosetouches of fail!) Do your dogs get away with things? Is that okay with you? I let my dogs get away with headbutting me while they’re getting petted. I know some would say not to let them, but it doesn’t bother me. I like it.
Don’t go into the new year with a dog that does what you don’t want. Work for the dog you’ve always wanted, and recognize that the dog you have can be (and most likely IS) that dog.

Q. In AKC agility, when you get into Excellent B and you start getting points for your MACH, who keeps track of the points?
A. The AKC has a computer system that keeps track of all qualifying scores and points earned in any of their dog sports. To see points earned as calculated by the AKC, go to www.akc.org and log in to the online store. Click on “AKC Reports” then “points and Awards”. Enter you dog’s information and click “View Points/Summary of the Title Progression for this do.” This will display a free report that shows your dog’s information in detail, including what events have occurred but are not yet included in the repot. Even handlers who keep their own records should check the AKC site periodically to make sure that an error has not occurred.
Actually, every handler should record his or her own accomplishments in some way. Occasionally, qualifying scores are lost or points are miscalculated. The best way to make sure that your championship points are recorded properly is to confirm that your score is recorded correctly at a trial. You can do this by checking posted results before you leave the trial and keeping your own accurate records that you cross-check with the AKC’s listings.

Merry Christmas, everybody!
In our busy lives, it’s too easy to just hustle and bustle the holidays away. Don’t let the stress and excitement of the holidays rev you up so high you can’t sit back with your favorite warm beverage and dog (s!) and enjoy the warm feelings that only Christmas – or a good hug to your dog – really brings. Excitement is great, but don’t lose your focus, and don’t stress out.
Relax. Give the gift of a not-stressed-out- you to your family, and your dog. Your dog will thank you, and happily snore under your feet, or play a quick game of target or a round with their IQ game.
Make memories. Perfect memories happen naturally. The most perfect Christmas memory I have is being up before everyone and sitting with my old dog, a Great Pyrenees, watching the ornaments on the tree sparkle. It was peaceful, and Pal was the best backrest ever.
Merry Christmas, one and all.
