refJust when you thought you had it all figured out…AKC releases their 2009 Committee Regulations.  What does this mean?  It means they’ve done all the hard work of finalizing changes that they want to implement, and it only needs the approval of the Board of Directors.  In other words, they are more than just recommendations, they are just about “sealed and done”.  How will it affect you?  For those of who just want the basics, I’ve narrowed it down to the changes that will affect the most people who compete (Judges and clubs that host sanctioned trials will want to read the requirements the full report by clicking on the “read more” link below.  The AKC direct is at the bottom.)

Keep in mind these changes are not immediate.  It will take 2 years for implementation of many of these changes.  Stay tuned for current updates as we hear about them.

    Rules Changes:

    1. Position-less table – count/time starts once all four paws have touched the table (and the dog remains on the table top).  Neither a sit nor a down position is required.

    2. Clubs may offer full refunds to exhibitors who have to cancel, after the trial has closed, but prior to the date of the trial, provided the club can fill any canceled entries from the wait list.

    3. If a dog is officially measured by a VMO or Agility Field Rep for a jump height card and that measurement places the dog into a lower jump height class, entrants in the Regular classes may move down effective immediately.

dog-with-pumpkinsIt’s pumpkin season, and they are everywhere around here!  Here is a great treat for your dog, and yes, they can eat pumpkin!

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

2 ½ cups whole wheat flour

    2 eggs

    ½ cup canned pumpkin

    2 tbsp peanut butter

    ½ tsp salt

    ½ tsp cinnamon

    Preheatoven to 350 degrees.

Combine ingredients, adding water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.  Roll the dough into a ½ inch thick roll. Cut into ½ inch pieces.

Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

Store in an airtight container for freshness, and enjoy treating your dog!

grey-sneezingIt’s allergy season, and don’t we all know it! Don’t forget to pack Kleenex when you go out to practice and play with the puppy, or take your benadryl before hand. Speaking of benadryl, I have benadryl to thank for both my childhood dogs! My mother has a bad reaction to benadryl. It makes her sleepy but still functional, and so she would make some interesting decisions during allergy season- such as let’s get the kids dogs, honey! I thank Benadryl for Pee-Wee my Maltese, and Pal, my Great Pyrenees. Poor mom, though, after the season was over we’d hear her saying she had NO idea why she’d gotten them, though she was always glad she had.

What do you do when your DOG has allergies?  While they may not be allergic to all the pollens this time of year like we are, there are many other things dogs are allergic to.  This can make them irritable, itchy, and slow up their agility runs!  I’d like to tell you about a dog health website that I highly recommend. …. www.Mercolahealthypets.com.  In the video below Dr. Karen Becker gives a holistic non-drug approach to this common problem.

You wanted this? The latest thing in reality TV is Animal Planets’ extreme dog training program.  The working title for the show is “Fetch me a beer.”  Which of course is one of the tricks that a dog is being trained to perform. Zak George, the famous YouTube dog trainer, has been working with a film crew preparing the new Animal Planet show.  Some of the tricks he has been teaching the dogs are amazing, such as riding a bike.  Others are quirky, such as helping a human get a date.  But you can be sure they will all be surprising.

George boasts that teaching the dogs is easy, it is the people who are more challenging – “There’s nothing we can’t attempt to teach a dog,” he says.

Expect the show to premiere in October.

It’s fun fact day! Dogtime.com has listed the top ten dog names for both females and males nationally!  Is your dog’s name in the list? (And if so, is your name Mary, Patricia, James, or John?) :-)   Would love to hear the most interesting dog name you’ve ever heard.  (In my family, we have the strange habit of always naming all our currently living animals with the same first letter (Pinky, Panda, Pooper, etc.)  Right now we are in the M’s.  (Mindy, Micky, Mo)….

    1. Bella / Max
    2. Molly / Buddy
    3. Lucy / Rocky
    4. Maggie / Bailey
    5. Daisy / Jake
    6. Sophie / Charlie
    7. Sadie / Jack
    8. Chloe / Toby
    9. Bailey / Cody
    10. Lola / Buster
